Band Camp is a activity that high school bands and auxiliary units traditionally start the school year with. It also typically involves a large number of students marching up and down the field under the hot sun while they get yelled at and sun burned.
Band Camp is a time where our band & dance team learn to work together, learn (or relearn) the basics of marching or dance, and get a head start on their music or choreography. Band Camp typically runs the two weeks before starts in the fall. We start in the late afternoon and work into the evening to accommodate our multi-track year round schedule, the hot weather, and students with summer jobs or activities. Each session of band camp has students working in teams to learn their marching skills. These teams of 8-12 students include teens of mixed ages. Each group proceeds at their own pace, working together to master the skills necessary. Band members work on marching skills while dance team members work on dance and equipment basics We eat dinner together and have some type of team building game or activity. There is also time for the musicians to work on their music and the dance team to work on their choreography. By the time Band Camp is over, we have students who know how to work together, who know a number of their peers, and who have learned their marching skills and gotten a great start on their year in band and dance team. What if you want to be in band but can't come to band camp? We work that out and students can make up their time. But, there's more to band camp then just basic marching skills. |
