What
happens at a Field Tournament? |
||||
Each fall, the NHHS Royal Regiment Band & Dance Team learn a Field Show. Typically consisting of 4 or 5 songs with choreography and marching movements, this field show is performed at football halftimes and at Field Tournaments. Field Tournaments take place outdoors at schools and other stadiums. 10 to 40 high schools compete against each other, each performing their field show. Each school usually gets about 10 minutes to perform with about 5 minutes in between groups to set up for the next performance. Spectators are usually charged admission, except at the LAUSD Band & Drill Team Championships which is a Field Tournament sponsored by the school district. Most of the tournaments NHHS attends are judged by the SCSBOA, the Southern California Band & Orchestra Association. The SCSBOA is organization of music teachers in Southern California. Groups are divided into divisions based upon the size of the band. Schools only compete against groups within their own division. A "Sweepstakes" trophy is often given to the group with the highest score across several divisions or throughout the entire tournament. The band is judged based upon music, visual achievement (mostly marching) and general effect. SInce every school has attached groups that are a little different, the NHHS dance team competes in a category called "Auxiliary Units". NHHS will usually arrive at the competition in time to perform. Then we stay to watch other groups perform and attend the awards ceremony. For most field tournaments we return after our awards ceremony, usually once a year we will stay late to watch schools perform in later divisions. |
